in general, i encountered conventional dorm rats. most were the kind who would let the college years be the highlight of their lives. there was one hyper active argentinian always sitting around in the lobby, jumping around and yapping. except when i was the only other one there. then he would just sit quietly. surprisingly, i met a ton of students who acted as if art school were just a random choice of majors they considered when applying for school. i kept running into the same kind of psychotic girl you remember from your own dorm experience. she cried a lot. fought with other girls a lot. needy. wanting. that girl. i wanted to reassure her that life just keeps getting harder but figured it was too mean. and even if i did, she wouldn't really believe it until she divorced her third husband at 44. occasionally i would meet someone like rye. who belonged to the art world already. a hard worker in a field which you wouldn't expect such struggle. no matter though. the ghosts were already there and they never changed.

old hotel young blood
i really enjoyed being a part of rye's dorm life. the building used to be the old olympia hotel and it's plainly obvious once you walk around the halls. it's an old building with old ghosts. and quite charming. i think the art kids really truly appreciate the aged floorboards.
