rad times!

Song y video to pick you up from the post lunch blues.

Dress Accordingly...

Unlike the more crucial aspects of my life, i.e. job, graduate school, birth control (or lack thereof), I like to have my birthday parties planned to the fucking tee. This year, the idea of a picnic at the park, roasting nicely under the hot desert sun, eating watermelon and mint, gathering under shade trees, huddled together with our Jack Daniels and iced tea seemed about right for turning 26. A lazy afternoon eating grilled food on the grass, watching the skate park and baseball games, no big deal.

I looked for images of "picnic + party + pretty + hipster - dirty - annoying + food" on the internet for inspiration and consistently found the same style. Beautifully quirky girl with long wavy hair drinking out of teacups on vintage cloth with cute cruisers in the background. Basically girls trying so hard to be Zooey Deschanel and that's not me, unfort. Still, they are very pretty pictures and I posted them below... interspersed among the greatest Guns 'n' Roses photos on the web. There. That should sum it all up YAAAAAAAAY!!!!

Best photo ever, y/y?

I really hope it's more Axl than Zooey.

'nother Nerve article

This is a really cozy and uplifting article about girl friendships. It reminds me of everything that is great about best girlfriends. The phone conversations that last hours, the hours that feel like minutes, the me too! moments, the inside jokes and crack-ups, the shared shoes and sweaters, the hand holding when you're too drunk. I really like it:

My favorite is when she says that time with close friends feels giddy and breezy :) Yay for ladies!

when I know I gotta do something...

So I have an errands list that looks like that disgusting fucklist Merlin keeps in his wallet. It's long and not pretty... that's what she said. Can you say 'that's what she said' about an already sexual comparison? Question for the ages, I guess. My sis just got out of surgery for two broken bones - a little skateboarding mishap in San Francisco and I'd like to send her a care package until she gets her cast set. Brother's high school graduation and BBQ luncheon is tomorrow (crazy! how old am I?) and I need to buy a gift and dry clean my dress or at the very least rub it with dryer sheets. I need to get a new library card today like, as in RIGHT NOW I'M GOING STIR CRAZY WITHOUT MAH NEW ADDICTION... The Cat Who mystery series. I know, I know. Buy me a raggedy robe and hair curlers. I've fully transformed into cat lady. 'Tis sad. Lastly, I've been asked to prepare martini jell-o shots, for Bachelorette Party #2 tomorrow. I made them some time ago after I read the Luxirare article about it :) Here's the article: http://luxirare.com/bento-box/

It looks simple enough, unless you're accident prone in the kitchen like myself and everything that could go wrong, will go wrong (remember hot dog soup?) I use agar in place of gelatin, i.e. jell-o, and the last time I bought Agar Agar was at the 99 Bahn Supermarket over on Gibson. Stupid me not knowing to check the package didn't realize all the instructions were in Chinese and the one English phrase was "one pound of water to eight liters of agar agar" which is literally the most insane way to measure water and/or agar. So please cross your fingers and toes for me that I'll find a package of agar with English instructions :)

P.S. Also I totally found out my sis has a boyfriend and he's a skater just like my bf... hahahahaha.

This is the cake I want to make for my birthday picnic:

Alexa Chung, eye for fashion

Last summer when I wasn't working and spent most of the day sitting inside reading, crafting, browsing the internet and online window shopping I decided to get interested in Soap Operas. You know, Days of Our Lives, As The World Turns, Guiding Light. I felt like I was living the cliche housewife lifestyle what with loads of free time and eating bon-bons, etc. and felt like I'd abide by the cliche housewife hobbies as much as that sentiment makes me weep and barf at the same time.

Certain waves of feminism would tell me to feel like shit for living this way and to that I say a big FUCK YOU VERY MUCH. It drives me a little nuts when people criticize a lifestyle they have no experience in whatsoever. Housewife-ing as I found is highly fun and addictive in short quantities. It also made me feel old and useless... But without it I would never had sought out my tutoring gigs :)

ANYWAY. Turns out, I hate soap operas. They're boring, waver back and forth between requiring either too much or too little attention, and often made me wish I were reading some historically intellectual poetry and I hate historically intellectual poetry (mostly.) So during housewife summer I watched It's On with Alexa Chung, a live talk show at 12 noon on MTV and pretty much fell in love with Alexa and am still in love to this day. She is who I research before I go shopping IRL. Enjoy!

By the way, here is some lovely English rock from Radiohead while you peruse the photos!

I think we'd be bff's if I were also born a lanky British beauty with affinities toward television presentation. Total hearts!
