travel day 14 and 15

saturday november 29. day fourteen.

spent all day with the kids. playing games and eating snacks and talking about princess barbie movies and then watching princess barbie movies. and explaining what idioms are. and running into doors and crying and sitting in a circle playing duck duck goose and yawning. and looking out the window. and drinking milk. b and m had fun but that's dear diary. and we drank a ton of beers and watched tv. criminal minds and fringe.

sunday november 30. day fifteen.

tami's mom in law took the twins to church. they're 3. i would never let my kids' grandparents take my kids to church. at least not without me explaining things and clarifying faith vs. belief. the lack of evidence associated with one and the other. tami and marc are jewish and grew up going to temple, etc. and brian, tami's husband, grew up with the church so they've decided to let their kids decide if they want to go to church or temple, whatever, with their grandparents. and as far as i can tell, both parents are agnostic. it sounds decent but like i wrote, i'd never let some weirdo take my impressionable kids into a religious brainwashing environment without making sure they understood the brainwashing part. and brainwashing is sort of a 8+ year old topic. why do people believe that you can't be a good person without religion? maybe because there's no handbook, per se, for an agnostic. so many rushing arguments are flowing through my fingers ... i have unfinished thoughts ... in the end, i've never met a christian who can accurately rationalize why evolution and a god can't coexist. whatever. one of the kids and i were talking about church and how their parents let them make their own decisions about their faith. she was taken aback when i told her that i had no choice in my own religion when i was a child. "i don't believe in a god" she said. i stared and nodded, "it's ok. many people feel the same way." it was all i could think of to say on the spot and now that i think about it, it was a pretty decent response. t's mom in law would have busted an eyeball if she said that in front of her.

funny how they still sang us "jesus loves you" later that day on the guitar.

the rest of the day we sat around the house. ate breakfast at sybil's, an omlette restaurant. peeled and ate clementines. after the kids went to sleep we watched a documentary about henry rollins in israel, performing his show and walking around with a famous photographer. it made me want to write letters to our government. but how do i start? and who do i write? we also watched terminator and bill and ted's bogus journey. slightly less satisfying. was keanu always this airheaded?
